Brief history before you discover Valldemossa
Like many other towns, Valldemossa was once occupied by the Moors (Valle de Mussa), who were expelled in 1229. In 1531, Mallorca’s first saint, Catalina Tomás, was born here. Her images are everywhere in Valldemossa, and an annual procession in her honor takes place on July 28.

Sights in Valldemossa

Chopin and George Sand in Valldemossa
The famous composer Frédéric Chopin and writer George Sand spent the winter of 1838-39 in Valldemossa, seeking relief for Chopin’s lung condition.
The two lived in Valldemossa during the winter of 1838-39, making them some of the island’s earliest tourists. George Sand’s book, “A Winter in Majorca,” details their stay. However, Chopin and Sand did not receive a warm welcome from the locals, who viewed them as outsiders. Sand’s account portrays a stark contrast to today’s idyllic tourist experience, highlighting rain, cold, and conflicts with the Mallorcans.
Despite the challenges, their time in Valldemossa was pivotal for Chopin’s musical career. Unfortunately, the climate did not improve his health, and the couple eventually moved on. Chopin’s piano remains in the Convent of La Real Cartuja, where an annual Chopin Festival is held.
The Monastery of La Real Cartuja
This major attraction houses Chopin’s residence and is open to visitors. Originally a royal residence, the monastery was occupied by Carthusian monks from 1399 to 1835. Its turquoise tower is Valldemossa’s landmark, and inside, you’ll find white arched corridors leading to various museums, including Chopin’s room.

The Church of Sant Bartomeu
The Gothic parish church, Sant Bartomeu, with its several side chapels and cross vault, towers above Valldemossa’s rooftops. It was constructed in the 13th century but has undergone many alterations.
Art in Valldemossa
The Coll Bardolet Cultural Foundation preserves and exhibits works by Josep Coll Bardolets, featuring landscapes, still lifes, and Mallorcan folk dancers. The foundation also hosts changing exhibitions, concerts, and conferences.
Michael Douglas and Valldemossa
American actor Michael Douglas owns a summer residence, S’Estaca, in Valldemossa, attracting guests like Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson. Douglas also started “Costa Nord,” a cultural center focused on sustainable Valldemossa, though it is currently closed.
Monestir de Miramar and Son Marroig
The Miramar Monastery, with its small museum and stunning gardens, and Son Marroig, a mansion-turned-museum dedicated to Archduke Ludwig Salvator, offer spectacular views and insights into local history.Â
Although Museo de Son Marroig is located in the neighboring municipality of Deia, it is definitely worth a visit. This mansion-turned-museum is dedicated to Archduke Ludwig Salvator and showcases some of his personal possessions, including furniture, paintings, maps, and drawings.
Son Marroig also hosts wedding ceremonies, offering a picturesque sea view from its grounds. Visitors can enjoy stunning sunset views, with a schedule available to plan the perfect visit.
