About hiking in Mallorca

If you’re considering hiking during your stay on the island, you must explore the pilgrimage route in Mallorca. This renowned path stretches from Port d’Andratx in the southwest to Port de Pollença in the northwest, following historic stone-paved trails.

The pilgrimage route primarily runs along marked paths, weaving through ancient terraces where olive trees have grown for centuries, and passing through picturesque mountain villages like Deià and Valldemossa, the orange valley in Sóller, as well as pine and oak forests. Of course, you’ll also enjoy dizzying sea views from the mountain peaks. Some hikers cover the entire route on a single holiday, booking overnight stays in refugios (hostels), which requires thorough preparation.

The beauty of the pilgrimage route in Mallorca is that you can also tackle individual stages or parts of a stage.

The Dry Stone Route in Mallorca GR 221

The ancient technique of dry stone construction has been used in Mallorca since antiquity. Local dry stone masons were skilled in building footpaths, roads, walls, terraces for agriculture, and channels for meltwater and rainfall.

This infrastructure was created using dry stone walls in the Serra de Tramuntana, and the Dry Stone Route largely follows this network of ancient footpaths, restored by the Consell de Mallorca to be accessible to hikers today.

Introduction to the 8 Stages of the Pilgrimage Route in Mallorca

On the Consell de Mallorca website, you can see the eight stages of the route, with estimated walking times ranging from 5 to 9 hours. The website also provides a map of hiking trails in Mallorca, offering more than 70 routes in addition to the classic pilgrimage route. This gives you ample opportunity to find a trail that suits your location and needs.

The pilgrimage routes on Mallorca pass through many unique areas. Highlights include views of the island Sa Dragonera, the terraces of Estellencs and Banyalbufar with their Islamic origins, and the stone landscapes of the route.

The route also passes through Valldemossa, home to the monastery where Chopin and George Sand spent a harsh winter in 1838-1839, and the picturesque mountain town of Deià, a haven for artists and landscape painters.

Other stunning areas include the orange valleys around Sóller, the Cúber reservoir, and Barranc de Biniaraix gorge, where paths and terraces enchant hikers. One of the toughest stages, featuring fountains and mountain springs, offers a true mountain experience, sometimes covered in snow that was historically important for trade.

Further along, you’ll encounter shady, wooded paths on the way to the monastery in Lluc. The pilgrimage route ends at Port de Pollença, where the sea reappears, and the arduous stages over the Serra de Tramuntana conclude.

Upon arriving at the charming seaside resort of Port de Pollença, it’s time to dip your tired feet in the sea, enjoy the view towards Cap de Formentor, and reflect on the journey. The experiences will undoubtedly surprise and tempt you to return.
