What to see and do – Estellencs in Mallorca
Every visit to Estellencs in Mallorca, nestled in the western Tramuntana mountains, feels like stepping into a time warp. This small, tranquil municipality, with its population of around 350 residents, offers an escape from the rush of modern life. The limited number of hotels and beds only adds to the town’s charm, seamlessly blending with the surroundings. Life here is slow and steady, with the town’s central canteen serving as a gathering point for the locals, where they meet for coffee and beer several times a day, creating a cozy, communal atmosphere.

Tips for reaching Estellencs in Mallorca by car, bike or bus
When heading to Estellencs, bring along a calm mindset and sturdy shoes. The village’s hilly terrain will challenge your fitness, but the rewards are worth it. Whether you arrive by car, bicycle, or bus (line 202 from Palma’s Plaza Espana), Estellencs promises a peaceful retreat where time seems to slow down, allowing you to breathe deeply and fully appreciate the beauty of Mallorca’s mountains.
The scenic route: MA10 and the path to Estellencs
Estellencs is a picturesque mountain village located along the MA10 route, connecting Andratx to Pollensa. This route takes you through the heart of the Tramuntana mountain range, passing by renowned destinations like Valldemossa, Sóller, and Lluc. While the entire journey may take about three hours by car, or even longer by bike, it would be a mistake to simply pass through Estellencs. This village is a gem worthy of exploration and, if possible, a stay of a few days to fully immerse yourself in its beauty.
Marveling at the Mediterranean: Viewpoints along the way
Located about an hour’s drive from Palma, the journey to Estellencs is a scenic one, especially when you leave the MA1 and head up past Andratx via the MA10. The drive will likely take closer to two hours, as you’ll be compelled to stop at several viewpoints along the way.
The route winds through breathtaking mountain landscapes and eventually brings you along the coast, hundreds of meters above the Mediterranean Sea. Here, a unique visual phenomenon occurs—the sea appears both endless and edged when viewed from such heights. The best spots to witness this are on the road between Estellencs and Banyalbufar, where numerous stopping points allow you to savor the stunning vistas.

Where to stay: The timeless charm of Hotel Maristel
Continuing towards Estellencs, just before entering the sleepy village, you’ll come across the town’s most famous hotel, Maristel. The hotel, divided between the main building on one side of the road and a large annex on the other, offers an exceptional stay, enhancing the feeling of stepping back in time.
Parking can be tricky, but there’s usually space along the annex road, which also leads to Cala Estellencs. If you’re lucky, you might find a spot along the main road, but be sure to check the signs to avoid fines.
Assuming you’ve wisely booked a 3-4 day stay in Estellencs, you’ll find it a place of peace and simplicity. There’s no ATM, bank, or large supermarket here—those are found 8 kilometers away—but the village has a handful of eateries and a small grocery store for essentials. Bring what you need from Palma or Andratx to ensure a relaxing stay.
Exploring Estellencs: Strolls, eats and hidden gems
Maristel Hotel is a place I return to time and again, reminiscent of a fairytale retreat. The hotel’s charm, with its stunning views, spa, and multiple terraces, provides a serene escape where you can unwind while gazing westward over the sea.
The terrace at the front of the hotel is a perfect spot for breakfast, especially as the morning sun peeks over the Tramuntana mountains. Just be sure to arrive early—the buffet tends to dwindle in the last half-hour.
Estellencs itself is a haven for those who appreciate tranquility and nature. The narrow streets and cozy restaurants, such as Vall Hermos, offer lovely views and a relaxing atmosphere.
On the outskirts of the village, towards Banyalbufar, you’ll find Restaurant Giardini, an Italian family-run establishment with an equally impressive view. Other local dining options include Montimar, known for its local cuisine, and Bar Sa Tanca.
Adventures beyond the village: Cala Estellencs and more
For activities, consider a trip down to Cala Estellencs, a pebble beach typical of the Tramuntana’s west coast. The journey, whether by foot or bike, is challenging but rewarding, with opportunities for a swim and a visit to the local beach bar. If you’re visiting on May 1st, don’t miss the wine and cheese fair, a local tradition since 2009. Estellencs is also a gateway to the wine region—drive on to Banyalbufar to see the famous terraced vineyards.
Cultural treasures: Sant Joan church and village walks
While in Estellencs, be sure to visit the Church of Sant Joan and take advantage of the numerous walking paths that weave through the area.
