Description

About the Artist — Cristina López Gaztelumendi

Cristina López Gaztelumendi (b. 1981, Ponferrada, Spain) belongs to a new generation of Spanish figurative painters who consciously link their practice to the lineage of realism and contemporary figuration.

Her early contact with painting came through an Artistic Baccalaureate in Ponferrada, but the decisive turning point arrived in the summer of 2016 in the workshop of Antonio López García—widely regarded as the pre■eminent living Spanish realist. López García’s radical insistence on seeing without preconceptions led Cristina to strip away previous habits and begin again from first principle.

From that reset, she undertook rigorous training with leading figures of Spanish realism and contemporary figuration, including Golucho (Miguel Ángel Mayo), José Luis Ceña, Miguel Coronado, Irene Cuadrado, Carmen Mansilla, Jorge Solana, and Félix de la Concha. Each mentor contributed distinct emphases—structure and color (Coronado), the humanist and expressive core of figuration (Golucho), the balance of memory and form (Ceña), and advanced modes of form and color (Cuadrado).

Cristina works primarily in oil, pursuing themes grounded in the familiar: people, objects, and places of her everyday life. The point is not mere depiction but recognition—the conviction that one should paint only what one knows deeply, allowing technical precision to serve authenticity rather than spectacle.

Her work has been exhibited in institutions and galleries across Spain, including the Museo del Bierzo, the Auditorio de León, and the Museo de las Cofradías, alongside contemporary platforms such as Arte Libre (Zaragoza), Galería Leucade (Murcia), and Nit de l’Art in Palma de Mallorca. In 2025 she was a finalist for the Tartget Prize International.

In the same year, she was discovered by the At Kinsky Art Collection, which has represented her since 2025, placing her work within an international context and strengthening her position as one of the notable emerging voices in Spanish realism.
