In the northeast corner of Mallorca lies the historic city of Artà. Why should you visit this part of the island? Let’s explore the slightly secret but very beautiful city. Come along – the journey to Artà in Mallorca awaits!

Explore Artá in Mallorca by car

Artà is home to just under 8,000 inhabitants, making it a true village or “pueblo.” This area has been inhabited throughout Mallorca’s history, with ruins and a museum that testify to its rich past.

The nature around Artà is authentic and unspoiled. Along the rocky bays, peregrine falcons and ospreys can soar peacefully, while wild mountain goats roam the rugged terrain. The cultivated landscapes, especially in the valleys, are dotted with almond and fig trees, and the fan palm thrives here, providing raw material for weaving baskets and bags.

What to see and do in Artà

Artà might not top the “to-do list” for most visitors to Mallorca, who often flock to cities like Palma, Sóller, Deia, Alcúdia, and Andratx. However, if you’re in the area, have rented a car, or are up for a pleasant bike ride, Artà is a great excursion destination. With a bit of patience, you can also reach Artà using Tib’s buses.

Market in Artà

Though primarily for local Mallorcans, Artà attracts tourists, especially on Tuesdays when the town hosts its weekly market at Plaza del Conqueridor. The market is known for local ceramics, basket weaving, clothing, and fresh produce.

Church of Santa Maria

Before you even arrive, this beautiful church dominates the Artà skyline from its position on the Sant Salvador hillside. The Església parroquial de la Transfiguració del Senyor, dating back to 1573, replaced an original 13th-century church. The climb up the stairs provides good exercise and offers a lovely excursion with views of 14 chapels, a baptismal font from 1672, and beautiful stained glass windows from the 20th century.

Muralla de Sant Salvador

After visiting Santa Maria, continue upwards to this 14th-century walled fortress Sant Salvador. Established to protect Artà from pirates, it offers a glimpse into medieval defense with lookouts and classic stone towers. The view over Artà and the distant mountains is breathtaking.

Museum in Artà

Located near the town hall, Artà’s museum, founded in 1927, preserves the town’s heritage. It features sections on natural history and archaeology, showcasing stuffed birds, local fauna, and ancient artifacts.
