It is one of the places on Mallorca with the most remains from prehistoric times. Artifacts such as pottery and coins found in nearby caves date back to Roman times. During Moorish rule, the town was an important area. The name &#8216;Petra&#8217; means &#8216;stone,&#8217; reflecting the sandstone that defines the region&#8217;s landscape.<\/p><p>Following the Catalan conquest in 1229, King Jaime I divided this area among his loyal knights. About 5 km outside Petra, atop a mountain over 300 meters high, lies the <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/YkVV9T2idJVL8Dhf9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Sanctuary of Bonany<\/a>. This monastery offers panoramic views and has been a symbolic and religious space for centuries, where farmers prayed for rain. Jun\u00edpero Serra delivered his last sermon here before leaving for America, from which he never returned.<\/p><p><strong>Museum of Jun\u00edpero Serra <\/strong>Jun\u00edpero Serra has become synonymous with Petra. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitpetramallorca.com\/post\/museu-frai-jun%C3%ADper-serra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The House Museum of Jun\u00edpero Serra<\/a>, where he was born, exhibits many of Serra&#8217;s personal belongings, furniture, and manuscripts, offering insight into his life and importance to the area.<\/p><p><strong>Sant Bernad\u00ed Monastery <\/strong>In the heart of Petra stands the old Franciscan monastery, <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/ZtHyHVis4UbYmJpz6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Sant Bernad\u00ed<\/a>, dating back to the early 17th century. This was where Jun\u00edpero Serra worked daily and pledged eternal fidelity to the Franciscan order.
