The History of Castell d’Alaró

Castell d’Alaró, one of Mallorca’s most visited sights among hikers, can only be reached by hiking. Built on cliff tops at 815 meters above Alaró, it served as a fortress during times of war. The first documentation dates back to the Moorish occupation (902-1231). The fortress was a refuge during the capture of the capital Medina Mayurqua by King Jaume I of Aragón in 1229. Despite never being taken by force, the Moors eventually surrendered due to exhaustion and lack of supplies. After several battles between kings, the last military garrison closed in 1741.
